Former Gambino Crime Family underboss and rising podcast star Sammy the Bull brings his podcast, Our Thing to the PodTV app
If the name Sammy “the Bull” Gravano, it’s no coincidence. Born Salvatore Gravano in 1945, Sammy was the underboss of the famous Gambino crime family and one of the main players in the prosecution against John Gotti, the crime family’s boss, in the early 1990s.
After decades working in the crime rings of New York and years in prison––followed by time in a witness protection program––Sammy has decided to open up about his wealth of dark, unique, and intriguing memories and experiences.
His new podcast, Our Thing, is already topping charts and catching the attention of just about everyone in the podcast industry, and this is just the beginning. After all, who wouldn’t want to hear insider stories about the mafia?
And Gravano is doing so much more than just recalling the facts of his history. Recently, when we had the honor of sitting down to talk with him, he shared about his methods for recording the podcast, “when I talk about a story, I remember. I remember, when I tell a story, if I was walking down the stairs, I remember that it was an old house with creaks as I went down the stairs. I remember that there was smoke in the air…I don’t make [those details] up, I just remember it. Whatever was there, whatever I remember, I say.” He went on to say, “I don’t ever lie. I tell the truth, when it’s good, when it’s bad, when it’s ugly. I don’t hold back.”
And it’s exactly that kind of harsh truth that has podcast audiences returning again and again for more episodes of Our Thing. The podcast, which has one season available now on PodTV and another season currently in the works, has blown away expectations both for Sammy’s team and for the podcast world at large.
In case you weren’t aware of the work that goes into a podcast, generally it takes years of hard work, dedication, and growth to reach star status with a podcast. And yet, with an infamous name to back him and incredible stories worth telling to back him, Sammy has risen through the ranks in less than a year. When asked about the fast track to fame, Sammy said “People tell me, ‘Sammy, the show is great, but you must have this Hollywood style studio, and this sophisticated equipment. You must have 20 people running around you.’ But people would be amazed what we’re working with. It looks like we’re this huge team, but we’re not. But we will be, and we’ll keep getting better.”
Big words for a show that will already send a shiver down your spine and make you think long and hard about some very real, very hard questions of life. But we at PodTV have no doubt that he will rise to meet them. Just in our recent sit down with the ex-mobster, we hair raising stories that have stuck with us in the days following. One of the most jaw dropping: the story of a famous hit on John “Johnny Keys” Simone, which constituted hours of Gravano speaking to his victim in what he described as “a love affair” in which he felt that he was forced to carry out a hit on “the epitome of our [mafia] life. Everything that we want and wish we could be, he was that.”
For more details on the story, you’ll just have to listen in to Sammy’s podcast, now available on the PodTV app. Hear more about his history with the mafia, how he has come back and established himself as such a success, and advice on how to accept even the darkest parts of ourselves.
Trust us when we say, you won’t want to miss this show, and it’s just getting started.
