While nearly every other area of home entertainment has declined in recent years, OTT is booming. But what exactly is OTT, and what does this mean for the media and entertainment industry?
OTT stands for “over-the-top” and refers to a media distribution service that streams over the internet, or goes “over the top of” traditional television platforms. Think Netflix, Hulu, Disney+, Apple TV+, Amazon Prime, YouTube — and now PODTV.
OTT offers users more control over what they watch, and when and how they watch it. It’s cheaper, more convenient, and opens up access to high quality content from around the world. It comes as no surprise then that cable, satellite, and broadcast television are increasingly taking a back seat while OTT has become one of the fastest growing media and entertainment services. In fact, it is estimated that roughly 27% of homes in the United States will have “cut the cord” to their traditional services by the end of the year in favor of OTT.
Another trend in the media and entertainment industry is podcasting.
As of 2020, an estimated 155 million Americans, roughly 55% of the United States population, had listened to a podcast. 104 million are monthly podcast listeners, up 5% from 2019. Industry experts predict that this number will surpass 160 million in 2023, with an expected increase of 20 million new podcast listeners every year.
The beauty of podcasting is that there’s a show for everyone. Endless variety and options, available at your fingertips. Top podcast categories include comedy, society and culture, business, politics, health, news, talk, and personal development / self-help.
Podcasts also offer another important element, one that is largely responsible for the popularity of social media growth as well: connection.
There’s a personal element to podcasts, they’re intimate, they’re accessible, they build community. Podcasters bring you into the inner circle, interviewing the world’s top thought leaders, celebrities, and experts, sharing knowledge, insight, and news from around the globe.
In recent years, podcasters have begun taking that intimacy and connection one step further with video podcasting - and therein lies the future for the industry, according to a recent Fox Business Network Report.
The future for podcasting is in video.
Video podcasting is “the next step, the next evolution of podcasting,” and is forecast to grow 5-10 billion dollars in the next 5-7 years.
Born in the midst of COVID lockdowns, PODTV was the brainchild of thought leaders from the podcast, OTT, and cable television industries.
“We created PodTV to combine the two hottest mediums in digital entertainment - podcasting and over the top (OTT) television programming.”
As the OTT model changes the world of content distribution and creation, PODTV rises to the occasion. PODTV meets the need for an ever increasing demand for high quality, original content that appeals to a variety of listeners - and is accessible anytime, anywhere.
